Prinsjesdag was celebrated in the Netherlands on September 17. The day is not only an important event for the inhabitants but also for the Dutch royals. Prinsjesdag marks the traditional start of the parliamentary year and is celebrated with great fanfare and elegant robes. The two princesses, Amalia and Alexia, were particularly eye-catching!
Prinsjesdag (Prince’s Day in English) in the Netherlands follows centuries-old traditions for the country’s royals. That would be the ride in the glass carriage, King Willem-Alexander’s speech from the throne, or the line-up on the balcony of Noordeinde Palace. But this year, alongside the age-old traditions, there were sashes gracing bare skin, daring plunging necklines, and fashionably recycled ensembles. Quite a lot was going on during Prinsjesdag 2024!
Overview
Alexia wore a dress by Mama Máxima on Prinsjesdag
For the festive ceremony, Princess Alexia chose a stunning red, floor-length dress featuring a pleated skirt, delicate organza sleeves, and a defined waist. She paired it with a VBH clutch, heels by Gianvito Rossi, and an 18-carat necklace by Rosa de la Cruz London.
Fashion and royal enthusiasts were sure to experience a sense of déjà vu upon seeing Alexia at Prinsjesdag. Because exactly to the day, on September 17, 2002, Máxima of the Netherlands wore this dress on her first Prinsjesdag. A year later, Máxima was seen in the gown again during a state visit from Mexico. Now, she seems to have bequeathed the dress to her daughter – a truly beautiful gesture.
Praise for Amalia’s dress …
Crown Princess Amalia received a lot of praise for her look and she also wore a dress that royal fans might recognize. Just two weeks ago, Sarah Ferguson, Duchess of York, appeared in the same dress by designer Safiyaa. The dress captivates with its rich bottle green hue, an alluring back slit, a deep plunging neckline, and a bolero-like overlay with long sleeves that elegantly cascade over the hands, reminiscent of a cape. She paired it with a golden clutch from Jacquemus and high heels from Stuart Weitzman. Instagram users were delighted with the look, with comments on the “Royalfashionpolice” account saying: “She looks great. She’s found her style” or “I’m not in love with the dress, but I love her in it.”
… and criticism of Máxima’s shoes
Mama Máxima wore a gray dress by Claes Iverson with an XXL bow on the shoulder. The fashion critics on Instagram were divided in their opinions. From comments such as “Beautiful! Only Máxima could wear this dress and look this beautiful” to “Not my favorite color on her, it washes her out,” it was all there. However, one detail of the ensemble that nearly slipped past everyone’s notice was the striking metallic platform heels by Aquazzura. They were affectionately christened “stripper shoes” by the users.

Sash faux pas at Prinsjesdag 2024
In general, it can be said that the styling of Crown Princess Amalia and her sister, Princess Alexia, has become much more daring than in previous years. This is primarily noticeable in the plunging necklines. Both Amalia and Alexia showed off quite a bit of cleavage on Tuesday.
However, there was also a small royal fashion faux pas last Prinsjesdag. As is usual at major state events of this caliber, the obligatory sashes were also used on Tuesday. Princess Alexia wore the ribbon and star of the Grand Cross of the Order of the Netherlands Lion, and Princess Amalia also wore the blue sash with orange stripes, which is customary in the Netherlands.
Yet, both princesses committed a slight fashion misstep. Contrary to royal etiquette, the sashes touched their bare skin, albeit only minimally. Princess Amalia’s sash touched the skin in the cleavage area, and Alexia’s sash touched the skin all over her upper body due to her low neckline. Nevertheless, these minor infractions are easily overlooked in light of their overall splendid appearances.
