Hair loss and thinning hair are problems that many women are familiar with. However, while daily hair loss of up to 100 hairs is completely normal, increased hair loss can lead to insecurity. L’Oréal is focusing on aminexil, an active ingredient that is advertised as a new solution to hair loss. But what is really behind it?
Hair loss in women – a taboo subject that is not talked about enough. In contrast to men, it is rarely hereditary in women. Hormonal imbalance and stress quickly lead to unwanted side effects and tufts in the brush. This is where Aminexil can help. STYLEBOOK took a closer look at the active ingredient patented by L’Oréal and spoke to a dermatologist about its mode of action and successes.
Overview
How exactly does aminexil work?
“Aminexil combats the hardening of the collagen around the hair follicle, which often leads to hair loss,” L’Oréal explains to STYLEBOOK. “The active ingredient improves the anchoring of the hair roots in the scalp and thus creates a basis for stronger hair growth.” The treatments with Aminexil should be used for six to eight weeks to achieve the best results. Aminexil is based on a combination of glucose and essential fatty acids, which are said to provide the hair follicles with valuable nutrients. But is this miracle product really that helpful?
Are there any side effects?
The press spokesperson emphasized that the company is not aware of any side effects to date. “We have not received any reports of side effects from Aminexil to date. In contrast to other active ingredients such as minoxidil, which can cause headaches or a drop in blood pressure under certain circumstances, aminexil is very well tolerated.” Nevertheless, L’Oréal also recommends testing the tolerance of the product on a small area of skin before using it for the first time.
Who is the active ingredient suitable for?
“Aminexil is suitable for all hair types and scalp needs,” says the press spokesperson. “It can be used by all customers who suffer from hair loss or want to prevent it.” It does not matter whether the hair loss is caused by hormonal changes, stress, or other causes – aminexil is intended to have a supportive effect and strengthen the hair roots.
Difference between aminexil and minoxidil
Minoxidil and aminexil are two active ingredients against hair loss, but they work differently. Minoxidil is a powerful agent that was originally developed to combat high blood pressure. As a result, it was discovered that it also makes hair grow because it stimulates the hair follicles and improves blood flow to the scalp. It is applied directly to the scalp and primarily helps with hereditary hair loss. Minoxidil has been thoroughly researched and is effective for many people. However, the side effects, such as skin irritation or headaches, can be quite severe.
Aminexil is the “little brother” of minoxidil, so to speak. It is gentler and less intensive but is often used in shampoos, serums, or special ampoules against hair loss. Aminexil helps by keeping the collagen sheath around the hair follicle soft so that the hair follicle does not fall out so easily. It is mainly good if you suffer from temporary or stress-related hair loss, so not necessarily for hereditary hair loss. The effect of aminexil is not as well researched as that of minoxidil, but it is considered to be well-tolerated and has fewer side effects.
In short, minoxidil is stronger and helps with hereditary hair loss, but it has more side effects. Aminexil is gentler, good for stress-related hair loss, and has fewer side effects, but it is also not as effective.
What the dermatologist says
“Aminexil is a branded active ingredient from kopexil, which comes from L’Oréal and is said to be similar to minoxidil in its effect. However, there have only been a few studies on it so far, which is why its effectiveness should be evaluated with caution. Hair growth products should generally be used for at least three months in order to achieve visible effects. Initially, there may be a reduction in hair loss and, in the best case scenario, new, fine hair will grow back. In the event of possible side effects, such as local contact allergies to ingredients, use should be discontinued,” says dermatologist Dr. Timm Golüke when asked by STYLEBOOK.
“Aminexil can also be used in combination with other hair growth-promoting substances such as minoxidil. The concentration of the active ingredient in aminexil products is usually around 1.5 percent.” However, Dr. Golüke also recommends testing the product on a small area of skin first and only applying it to a large area if there is no reaction.

Aminexil can help with hair loss
“We know that hair loss is an emotional burden for many women,” says the L’Oréal press spokesperson. With Aminexil, the company wants to offer “a scientifically sound and well-tolerated solution” that “can help to reduce hair loss and strengthen the hair.” It is important to start treatment at an early stage in order to achieve the best results.
Hair loss can have various causes, and L’Oréal also always recommends a consultation with a dermatologist if hair loss suddenly increases. “Our products offer valuable support, but individual advice and a comprehensive diagnosis are the key to achieving the best possible result,” concludes L’Oréal.
