Selena Gomez, best known as a singer and actress, recently revealed in a moving interview with Vanity Fair that she is unable to carry her own children. This news came as a surprise to many, as Gomez has often spoken about her desire to become a mother in the past. However, the 32-year-old faces health challenges that prevent her from doing so.
Overview
“Unfortunately, I can’t carry my own children”
Gomez has a significant medical history. In 2013, she was diagnosed with lupus, an autoimmune disease that attacks her immune system and made a kidney transplant necessary. She was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder, which she addressed publicly in her 2020 documentary My Mind and Me. These conditions have profoundly affected Gomez’s life and her ability to become a mother. In her Vanity Fair interview, she said publicly for the first time: “I’ve never said this before, but unfortunately, I can’t carry my own children. I have a lot of medical issues that would put my life and the baby’s life at risk. That was a loss I had to come to terms with for a long time.”
A painful loss: “I had to mourn that”
For the Hollywood star, the unfulfilled desire to have a child is an emotionally stirring topic. Selena Gomez shared that she had envisioned a different path to motherhood, and the realization that she could not have biological children was deeply painful. “It was something I had to mourn. I always thought that one day I would become a mother in the very traditional way, but fate had other plans.”
Medication and its effects: “A constant battle”
Selena Gomez’s bipolar disorder requires continuous medication, but this poses significant risks to a potential pregnancy. In an earlier interview with Rolling Stone, she spoke about how difficult it was for her to choose between her health and her desire to have children: “I cried in the car when I went to visit a friend who was trying to get pregnant,” Gomez confessed. “It was hard because I felt so helpless. I’m on two medications for my bipolar disorder that would make it impossible for me to have a baby. It’s an ever-present issue in my life.”
Doctors warn that the medication Gomez takes to stabilize her mental health could cause risks such as heart defects and developmental problems in the child. “It took me a long time to accept that,” says Gomez. “It’s a relentless struggle between the desires of my heart and the limitations of my body.”
Selena Gomez on adoption and surrogacy: “It will be my child”
Despite the many hurdles, Selena Gomez remains hopeful and is positive about the future. She has come to terms with the fact that her path to motherhood will be different than she originally thought. “While it’s not the traditional path, I’m immensely grateful for the alternative routes to motherhood that exist,” she expresses. Adoption and surrogacy are realistic options that she is seriously considering. “I think it’s wonderful that there are people who are willing to help as surrogates or that there is the option of adoption. It’s a blessing that these avenues exist for those who want nothing more than a family of their own.”
Gomez added: “I’m so excited about what this journey is going to look like for me. It won’t be the conventional image of pregnancy, but that doesn’t concern me. At the end of the day, it’s going to be my baby, and that’s all that matters.”

Selena Gomez is firmly planning with children in her future
Gomez also has a plan for her future as a mother: in an interview with Time, she revealed that she plans to adopt a child at the age of 35 if she doesn’t have a suitable partner by then. “I was alone for five years and got very used to it,” she explained. “Many people fear solitude, and for a time, I grappled with that fear. But then I accepted it and made my plan: if I haven’t found someone by 35, I’m going to adopt a child.”
Support from her partner, Benny Blanco
Although Selena Gomez currently has a steady partner – music producer Benny Blanco – she doesn’t want to give up her plan. The two have been officially together since the end of 2023, and Gomez describes him as a great support in her life. “I’ve never loved like this before,” she said of her relationship with Blanco. “He’s a light in my life, my best friend. I tell him everything.” Still, Gomez has made it clear that no matter how their relationship develops, she wants to keep her own name: “I have no intention of changing my name, regardless of circumstances. I’m Selena Gomez, that’s all.”
